Albuquerque Fire Today: Crews Respond to Major South Valley Blaze Near Broadway

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Firefighters from multiple agencies responded to a large fire in Albuquerque’s South Valley near Broadway Boulevard, prompting road closures and a significant emergency response as crews worked to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures.

According to emergency officials, the fire was reported at a recycling facility located along Broadway Boulevard SE, south of Rio Bravo Boulevard. First-arriving firefighters encountered heavy flames and smoke and quickly requested additional resources as the incident escalated. The response was ultimately upgraded to a second alarm due to the size and intensity of the fire.

More than 50 firefighters from Bernalillo County Fire Rescue and Albuquerque Fire Rescue were dispatched to the scene. Crews focused on containing the fire within the property and protecting nearby buildings from potential damage. Authorities said the blaze involved large quantities of recyclable materials, creating thick smoke that was visible across parts of the Albuquerque metro area.

As firefighters battled the flames, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office closed portions of Broadway Boulevard near Prosperity Avenue to allow emergency personnel to operate safely. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes while suppression efforts continued.

Officials reported that the fire burned approximately two acres before crews were able to bring it under control. Emergency responders remained on scene for several hours extinguishing hot spots and monitoring conditions to ensure the fire did not reignite.

No injuries were immediately reported among firefighters or civilians. However, authorities issued health advisories because of the large volume of smoke generated by the incident, urging nearby residents to remain aware of changing air-quality conditions.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Fire investigators are expected to conduct a detailed examination of the scene to determine how the blaze started and whether any contributing factors were involved.

The incident marks another significant fire response in the South Valley and drew widespread attention from residents who observed the large plume of smoke rising above the city skyline. Authorities are expected to release additional information as the investigation progresses.
