However, the conflict didn’t conclude as the bandits escaped into a dense forest. The soldiers awaited orders to enter the forest and eliminate the threat, but the delay in receiving those orders and additional weaponry held them back. Despite this, Colonel Zaki persisted in training his soldiers, preparing them for potential night operations.
One night, Sergeant Umar, visibly fatigued, interrupted Colonel Zaki, who was reviewing documents in his tent. Colonel Zaki, aware of Umar’s mental strain, had previously advised him to seek rehabilitation after their safe return.
“Colonel, I’m afraid,” Sergeant Umar confessed, sharing his personal struggles and lack of familial support.
Colonel Zaki, recognizing the importance of boosting morale, reassured Umar that success in the upcoming operation would pave the way for a return home, where he could build a family and leave military life behind.
Anticipating the arrival of necessary weapons by the next morning, the soldiers planned to venture into the forest for a decisive strike against the bandits. Colonel Zaki took a moment to encourage Sergeant Umar, emphasizing the potential for a brighter future after a successful mission.
Suddenly, chaos erupted as shouts and grenade explosions signaled an ambush. The camp guards informed Colonel Zaki, and gunshots pierced the night. The bandits had launched an unexpected attack on the Army camp, throwing it into disarray.
Amid the darkness, with only starlight overhead, the soldiers found themselves vulnerable to the surprise assault. Colonel Zaki, realizing the gravity of the situation, ordered a retreat to preserve the lives of his soldiers. The camp descended into chaos, marked by gunfire and burning tents.
While Sergeant Umar sought refuge in a tree, Colonel Zaki, determined to ensure the safety of his men, faced the difficult decision of leaving no one behind. As he urged Umar to fall back, a fellow soldier volunteered to reach the Sergeant.
Time was of the essence, and the advancing gunmen left no room for delay. Colonel Zaki rushed towards Umar, narrowly avoiding a gunshot to his shoulder. The soldier who volunteered to help was not as fortunate and fell to the ground.
Cornered and with no way to retreat, Colonel Zaki, Sergeant Umar, and the remaining soldiers faced the imminent threat of the encroaching gunmen.
