Derek Ouimette, a beloved former Columbia High School student-athlete and standout basketball player, tragically passed away on May 23, 2025, in Albany, New York. He was 22 years old.
Derek was a proud member of Columbia High School’s Class of 2021. Known for his athleticism, discipline, and leadership, he played an integral role on the school’s boys’ varsity basketball team, wearing jersey #2. Standing at 6’2” and weighing 175 lbs, Derek excelled in both the point guard (PG) and shooting guard (SG) positions. From 2018 to 2024, he consistently contributed to both the junior varsity and varsity basketball programs, leaving a lasting legacy within the Columbia athletics community.
His commitment extended beyond the court. Derek was deeply respected by coaches and peers alike for his sportsmanship, quiet determination, and humility. He often mentored younger athletes, reinforcing his impact on the community.
Derek’s unexpected death has brought immense grief to East Greenbush and surrounding areas. The outpouring of tributes highlights his kindness, strong moral compass, and deep devotion to family and friends.
He is survived by his loving parents, Michael and Jennifer Ouimette of East Greenbush, NY; his younger brother, Tyler Ouimette; his maternal grandparents, Thomas and Carol Whitman of Averill Park, NY; and his paternal grandparents, Ronald and Margaret Ouimette of Schodack, NY. He is also mourned by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, former teammates, and lifelong friends.
Memorial arrangements will be announced by the Ouimette family in the coming days. Loved ones are encouraged to honor Derek’s memory by contributing to the Columbia High School Athletic Scholarship Fund, a cause close to his heart.
